Mars, the planet of desire and how we reach out for what we want, just began its retrograde journey in the early degrees of Aquarius. It will continue moving against its normal path through the upcoming summer eclipse season and dip back into the end degrees of Capricorn before it goes direct on August 27th.
The fiery, warrior-like planet of action helps us reach out for what we want and drives our need to express ourselves. It brings up what motivates us.
If our desires are approached consciously, Mars can help us channel great strength and focus to manifest our goals. If we’re unconsciously driven by unnamed or unclear desires, we can experience frustration, obstacles, and turmoil.
When any planet goes retrograde, we’re invited to step deeper into the energy signature of that planet. Here, we’re encouraged to dive into our motives:
- What do we want?
- Why do we want it?
- How can we get it?
Mars in Aquarius wants to change, to evolve, and to know the feeling of release from restriction – not only for ourselves personally, but for the collective. Aquarius encompasses concern for humanity, so the impetus to examine our desires brings us to the arena of whether or not manifesting them serves the whole of us.
If we’re feeling boxed in, blocked, or limited in exercising our power – and if we’re honest, who among us isn’t feeling this way as lines are drawn daily around personal and global freedoms? – retrograde Mars asks us to stop and see if our choices reflect our truest desires.
Then, we’re asked to take another step and consider how our actions to get what we want affect those around us.
The more harmonious we are with our highest, truest desires – those that come from our hearts – the greater positive effect we’ll have on each other and our world. As it turns around, Mars remains in opposition to Venus, the planet that rules what we love, so striking the balance here is the fastest way to harmony and peace.
The Moon is waxing as I write this; she’ll reach her fullness in Capricorn tomorrow night, June 27th, at 10:53 pm MDT, when she joins Saturn in its retrograde position. Together, they will form a trine to Uranus in Taurus, the planet of change.
Grounding into this flow of earthy energy could help us find practical solutions – if we’re willing to shift our outmoded ways of thinking and avoid habitual reactions. That’s critical, because the opposition of Mars and Venus creates a T-square to Jupiter retrograde in Scorpio and we may well find ourselves tripping over old ruts in our paths, where our thoughts are automatic, reactive, and repetitive.
So…what are the remedies? What can we do to tap into and receive the gifts that surround us?
- Stop. (with other planets, I’d say pause, but Mars calls for a full stop)
- Create space to entertain new and inventive approaches.
- Then – once we’re clear – move in the direction of the energy that shows up, with open mind/heart connections.
Staying with any one of these actions for as long as we need to is okay – there is really no rush. In fact, rushing right now is to court chaos…and who wants that?
With blessings of peace, always
